The Strengths and Weaknesses of the Sociocultural Perspective

Psychology is one of the newest sciences. Because it is the science of the mind and behavior, it is also less concrete than some of the other sciences. Over the years, social scientists have developed theories or perspectives based off of their observations, research, and the perspectives of other scientists. Although there is some overlap, each of the major perspectives of psychology is unique. As a result, they each have strengths and weaknesses and explain psychology in a different way. One theory, the sociocultural perspective, is exactly what its name suggests. It’s the idea that the society and groups that an individual belongs to are what influences development, thoughts, and behavior. For example, technology is a tool in western society that less industrialized societies aren’t exposed to. An individual that has grown up with complete access to all the latest technology is going to think differently than an individual that has never seen any form of technology. Overall, some behaviors and ways of thinking can only be caused by exposer to specific social and cultural contexts, as this perspective explains. A second strength of the sociocultural perspective is the emphasis on the role of adults in childhood cognitive development through guided participation. Vygotsky introduced the idea that children learn in a zone of proximal development. Meaning the distance between what an individual can do alone and what they can do with guidance and assistance from a capable member of society (Mcleod, 2010). Any skills outside the zone would be already mastered or still too difficult to attempt alone. â€Å"To Vygotsky, learning in collaboration with more knowledgeable companions drives cognitive development (Sigelman).† This is true throughout the world. Why The Government Goes Corrupt - 785 Words

When the authorities go corrupt, who is there to stop them? The government? What happens when the government goes corrupt? No one has more political voice and power than the government. At least, that’s what they say. What the people don’t realize, is that they have the biggest voice over any form of government or power. They say there is strength in numbers and there is no better example than citizens who are mistreated by their own government and demand more. Citizens have many reasons to rebel. When the people start to become less and less of people and more of disposable items to the government, it becomes time for a solution. Many governments are able to resolve a solution, but there are still few that cannot. The government lashes out in violence and mass murder, and in severe cases, genocide. When these events occur it seems as the people can not stop it. The government is trying to destroy any and all power the people possess, and that will not be tolerated by the people. As stated, there is strength in numbers, you cannot stop the mass of individuals with one sole purpose. The people rebel and fight back, demanding the end of the violence. The lower class people of Russia living under the rule of Vladimir Lenin started to feel that they were being treated unfairly with the rich, upper class possessing more political power than them. They believed that every man and woman deserves the same amount of voice and impact in the government. When Lenin heard the cries of the poor, he shifted the power to equal out between the classes. As the poor gained more and more voice, the more and more equal the people became, yet in this instance equal was not good. All people made less and less money. It was even too little for the poor, let alone the rich, who adapted to a wealthy lifestyl e. The people waited longer than ever for food and groceries. With the people in such a deprived state, and Stalin in command, the government gained power and ruled with an iron fist. The people were forced to work jobs demanding physical labor for little pay. Im from a small New England town that no one has ever heard of. I have gray eyes and light brown hair that gets blond sunstreaks in the summer. People think of me as tall and skinny, but Im only 5 8 and I think that Ive put on enough weight to qualify for thin. People also think of me as being really smart, but I just read a lot and have a good short-term memory. Last summer, I worked at an amusement park and I learned how to talk to complete strangers. I also learned how diverse people are and that you never know what kind of person you will meet next. My friends know that they can always talk to me because Im a good listener and Im always willing to give advice. This is the sequential process. The other could prefer a more random approach that will involve writting and getting information when he needs it. This is the random process and approach. The sequential process is more like clockwork that moves strategically step by step over a specific period of time. The random p rocess on the other hand is like a stopwatch thet statrs and stops at will (Sprenger 2003, p 145). Both qualities and ordering abilities are common among every individual. They however exsist in different combinations that is based on donminance. The concrete sequential forinstance characterises a practical and well organised individual who likes to plan their work. The concrete random combination is rather practical as well alive to the physical world but they mostly learn by trying and failing and do lille or no planning (Dunn and Dunn 1978, p356). The abstract sequential on the other hand likes to generate ideas in a logical way and bases their perspective on the claim that how an individual feels about something does not change their teality version of the thing. The abstract random works from the heart and gives little time to reason and thinking. This goes against the democratic concept of the model that gives the learnner the choice of learning at their own pace. Implementation and recommendation The lear ning process in the 21st century has benefitted greatly from the various proposed learning styles. The understanding and interpretation of the various learner preferences has allowed for the adjustment of various curriculums to accommodate more learner friendly methods (Ormrod 1995 p 37). The learning process is an entirely private affair that has for a long time depended on the supervisor teacher and policy makers. This has made the relevance of the various learning styles obsolete. This has been at the expense of learners who end up suffering from authoritarian curriculums and systems of education.
